Google Blogs About Smart Pricing

In response to a lot of talk recently about ’smart pricing’ with adsense, Suzie at Adsense Publisher support has posted an urgent clarification to dispel some mythology.

Since I have recently commented on smart pricing myself, I think it’s fair to include a link to it and worth a read.

My summary of the post is that:

  • Pricing is determined by the conversion rate, not clickthru rate. Google must measure this - though how they do this I confess I don’t know because not all advertisers have conversion tracking on.
  • Targeted traffic will increase both the CTR and the advertisers conversion rate - so this is an important factor for attracting higher priced clicks.
  • The sites at the top of this paradigm will make more and the ones at the bottom will make less.
